Five Great Themes For Making Kids Quilts

Most of us still own a stuffed animal, a doll, a blanket or maybe even some article of clothing made for us when we were children. Even as we are going through our chaotic, cold hearted pre-teens, we maintain a soft spot in our hearts for that treasured childhood item. A kids quilt can truly be one of the most valuable possessions way beyond adolescence, and even for the remainder of one's life.

Here are a few themes for making kids duvets:

Favourite Animals

Generally, it's a great idea to go with more iconic, easily identifiable shapes. Not so much that it is impossible to form a great quilt with more detailed, intricate art work, but most quilting comes down to pattern work and strong shapes that are instantly identifiable from their shape alone. Strong colour schemes can truly help as well. So a kid who loves big moggies would maybe love a quilt with the form of a tiger quilted onto the center with an orange and black color scheme.

Basic Learning

For little youngsters, a quilt themed after the alphabet, numbers or colours of the rainbow can be fun and a great way to start them on the path to basic familiarity with stuff like colours and reading.

Themed Panel Quilts

Panel quilts have something unique in each panel. In one panel, you could have a square with a poem you have written for them or the lyrics to a favorite song. In the next you might have a picture of a favourite hero of theirs such as Batman, Robin Hood or possibly a personal hero like a favorite teacher or relation.

The next may be a piece of their baby blanket or an old t-shirt and so on. Each panel can be its own mini-quilt, in a way. If your kid loves cartoon books, you could even model the quilt after a page of their favorite story.

Sentimental Pieces

If you like, you can build a quilt entirely from other existing quilts, blankets and other fabric objects that have some sentimental value but maybe are beginning to fray and crack into pieces. Rather than patching up your father's favorite blanket until there's nothing left of the original, why don't you utilize it as a liner or padding for a new quilt? You can make a border from the flannel pyjamas your child was raised in and such like.

Favourite Themes

When all else fails, you can just go with themes that you know the child loves. Say you've got a nephew who loves pirates. Well, it should be simple enough to find some neat looking fabric covered in pirate ships or images of the ocean. Get a couple of these fabrics and throw together a nice looking quilt that they'll value for a life-time.
