Anyone who owns vinyl records from the 60's probably has one or two of his famous designs right in their own home. His work, even though millions of people know it, may not be considered to be art. The designer doesn't want to talk about that. He'd rather not use the word "art" to distinguish anything. During an interview, the designer stated that he believes that the term "art" has been outdated and that the word "work" should be used instead, and if that work is above and beyond average, it should then be called "great work." If the work accomplishes what it was meant to, it's good, when it misses the message, it's bad.
For example, he claims that his work follows a very deliberate process. Using hard-to-miss, red nylon rope, the artist connected his work with the things that inspired it, as well as the drawings and sketches he created prior to the final draft. He enjoys the diversity of his work, and loves to see how far he is able to stretch the boundaries surrounding it.
The iconic poster mentioned earlier of the rainbow-hair singer has been reprinted in over six million copies. The work shows the singer with very colorful hair, and the profile was inspired by another well-known artist. According to the artist, the majority of people think he must have been on drugs when he created this work. The artist has denied taking drugs.
